• World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9 October to commemorate the founding of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) • Under this year’s theme “#PostForPeople: Local Service. Global Reach,” the UPU envisions the postal network as a driving force in building an interconnected, inclusive, and sustainable society • Correos joins this celebration at a time of transformation and growing presence in the public sphere, acting as a state instrument to deliver essential services to society
Madrid, October 8, 2025 – Correos joins the celebration of World Post Day, which commemorates on October 9 the founding of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), the United Nations agency specialized in postal services. The UPU was established in Bern in 1874 and is one of the earliest examples of multilateralism.
On World Post Day, the 192 member countries of the UPU celebrate the vital role of the postal sector as a lifeline that delivers essential services to people everywhere.
According to UPU Director General Masahiko Metoki, this year’s theme, “#PostForPeople: Local Service. Global Reach”, aligns with the strategy approved at the recent congress held in Dubai, which “envisions the UPU as a driving force in building an interconnected, inclusive, and sustainable society, supported by an innovative and seamless postal network capable of delivering modern, high-quality services to people around the world.”
Correos also celebrates its day
With over 300 years of history, Correos joins this year’s celebration at a pivotal moment in its transformation process. The Spanish company has strengthened its public mission through the 2024–2028 Strategic Plan and the recent amendment to the Postal Law, which recognizes its value as a strategic asset for social, territorial, and economic cohesion through the assignment of Services of General Economic Interest (SGEI), such as administrative procedures and basic financial services. This historic milestone highlights the company’s ability to deliver essential services to citizens across every corner of Spain.
To mark World Post Day, a full program of activities has been organized throughout the week, including the exhibition “Heritage Collections: Museum, Bibliographic and Documentary Holdings of Correos” at the Clara Campoamor building in Madrid, conferences on the relationship between Correos and literature or philately and cinema, and guided tours of the iconic Palacio de Comunicaciones in Cibeles.
In this way, Correos aims to emphasize the importance of mail worldwide and joins the invitation issued by the UPU Director General in his annual message: “I urge everyone to work together to ensure that the postal service continues to deliver quality services to all people, everywhere, connecting local communities with the world. Let us unite to make the postal network more accessible, more reliable, and more inclusive than ever.”
A bridge that connects people with the world
The international postal network is one of the largest and most far-reaching service infrastructures in the world. With over 600,000 post offices, it provides communities across the globe with reliable access to communication, commercial, financial, and social services. From the most remote areas to the busiest cities, the postal network is a bridge that connects people with the world.
This year, the UPU, through its theme “#PostForPeople: Local Service. Global Reach”, also pays tribute to the men and women who make this extraordinary universal service possible: the 4.6 million professionals whose dedication ensures the postal network continues to serve billions of people every day—from offices to logistics centers, and the millions of postal workers who, on foot or by vehicle, deliver useful services to citizens in every corner of the world.
